Character Background
• History: here
• Core Relationships:
Tuck - Billie met Tuck when he tried to steal a jackalope Tuck had killed for a meal. Tuck shared the jackalope, and thinking Billie was an adult halfling, invited Billie to come with him on his adventures. It was a misunderstanding on both sides, as Billie thought Tuck was inviting him along to give him something. This mistake was uncovered much later, and when he learned that Billie, much like himself, was an orphan, Tuck offered to continue to let the boy travel with him, and a parental relationship developed between the two.
Vyng - Tuck and Billie met Vyng in a small mountain village around Charles Eve while they were all investigating legends of great wealth to be found. He ended up joining the party as well, and Billie also regards him as a father. They both have a very hands off style of parenting, mostly allowing Billie to do as he pleases, aside from correcting him when he swears, but they are both very protective.
Perell - Billie's friendship with Perell has a bit of an unusual start, with the latter being a wizard trapped in a box, able to communicate initially only with Billie. His frustration at being trapped leached into Billie, causing him to act as though he was possessed for a time. Perell began earning the trust of the entire party after helping to save Vyng from the spirit world, and although Billie is sometimes frustrated with his attempts to teach him, he still regards Perell as an uncle, a teacher, and a friend.
Character Personality Through Key Moments
(2+) Positive Experiences:
After Old Bill's passing, Billie found himself alone in the world. He had never found acceptance amongst the other halflings to begin with - quite the opposite, as they had a low tolerance for him, and found both his appearance and his behaviour very strange. This time spent alone and unloved leaves him forming very strong attachments to those who show him affection, particularly Tuck and Vyng. This causes him to become fiercely protective of his parents, often contending with adversaries far bigger than he is, and even stepping forward and telling Maggie Cole to kill him instead when she threatens them.
As one of the spring fae, Billie is strongly connected to life and growth, and frequently shows how much he cares for for those around him. This often guides him to try to help those around them. He can recall, in a massive show of power, knitting two rivers together so that they touch because he knows the lake they're connected to is drying up. The lake is the main water source for the halfling lands, and he chose to help out of fear that if he did not, the halflings would die out.
Another prime example of his drive to help others shows when he leaves the tree he lived in, and his fairy life to take the place of a dying child who's family asked for his help. He is unable to heal the child, so instead he changes places with him as he feels it's against his nature to let the life go.
He develops a closer friendship with Meers as well, in part thanks to his attempts to soothe his anxiety by taking him to the kitchen to prepare meals together. He does this often when the teenager shows signs of stress in an attempt to distract him from his worries. He is not always the most helpful kitchen assistant - their first time cooking together, when asked for a deep pan, Billie presented him with a bread pan he had been sleeping in, a salad bowl, chopsticks, some bits of small kindling, his blankets, some hair from their pig, Francis. He does try, though, and Meers appreciates the gesture, at one point even referring to Billie as his little sous chef.
He had initial reservations about Tuck's succubus ex-girlfriend, he does come to like her and is able to empathize with Alison's situation with the Light Guard after she reveals she was forced to work for them. He's deeply hurt by her betrayal when it turns out she was trying to manipulate them into killing her bosses, but he still begins to cry when it comes time for them to part ways. In spite of how she's hurt them all (especially Tuck), he will still miss her, and he still cares for her deeply enough to tell Ruby to be nice to her.
(2+) Negative Experiences:
There have been a couple occasions where Billie has killed out of anger (aside from the crocodile he killed under the influence of Perell's water monster). At Highspear Mall, when they were attacked by one of the gangs trying to gain control there, when they came across the thieves in Cartwyn's apartment, and again, when they're attacked by the group of Crystal Bay Pirates in the bar at the Crystal Bay. He feels no guilt in these cases, and even cries fake tears over their deaths as Tuck tells Alison he is not okay with her putting his family in danger after the death of the Crystal Bay Pirates. As his relationship with Tuck and Vyng develops, however, he does begin to consider the deeper ramifications of his actions, and that the people he kills also have loved ones. This does lead him to experience guilt as he considers how it will affect the families of those he's killed.
Much of the reason behind Billie's actions is that fairies are driven by desire, and his strongest desire is to be comfortable. It is uncomfortable to see his family - that sense of safety and security - threatened, so he lashes out so violently to try to end the threat and make that discomfort stop.
Also driven by this motivation is how he values the items around him. As a thief, he places a higher value on things that will bring him comfort (like a soft blanket he steals from Maggie) over things most would be more tempted by, like money, or gold.
Billie often shows he has absolutely zero impulse control, both due in part to being a child, and because of his nature as a fairy. His official alignment is chaotic, which drives him to jump into even dangerous situations without forming a plan, or considering the consequences of his actions. This can lead him into trouble, for example, making himself sick after eating seven bergumfruit directly after being told that the average person can only handle one. However, it's worked out to the party's advantage as well at times, such as when he steals the feline mayor, Lil Sir. The cat is able to help them uncover truth behind the town's rat problem, by revealing a summer romance between two of the townspeople. Brenda intends to use the rats to try to sabotage Gregom's business in hopes it will drive him back to her, and thanks to this knowledge, the party is able to find a way to bring the pair together in return for Brenda getting rid of the rats.
Deer Country Attributes
• Canon Powers:
- Nature manipulation - one of Billie's memories as a fae is of him knitting two rivers together because the lake in the halfling lands was drying up.
- Item Switching - The ability to turn one item into another. This sort of magic was what allowed him to switch places with the dying halfling child, but now that he is relearning how to use his magic, it's limited to a much smaller scale, such as swapping out poisonous berries for edible ones.
- Magic missile - a concentrated beam of energy aimed at an enemy. He was only able to do this once, while trying to defend Tuck and Vyng from the water monster's attacks.
- Shield spell - A pink protective bubble to surround him and his allies to keep them safe. He's only managed to use it once, though.
- Hand goggles - Billie is able to hold up his hands to his eyes like they're a pair of binoculars and actually have it work like the real thing.
• Blood Type: Darkblood
• Omen: Wicker, a black and brown cat
• Blessed Day: December 7th
• Patron Pthumerian: Dorothea
• Blood Power Manifestation:
Magic missile, and his shield spell will remain, but will require a blood sacrifice.
His item switching will remain unchanged, but on a small scale, and may not work completely (as when he first re-learned this power, there's a chance he might only change the flavour of an item instead of the whole item itself. Cookie flavoured rocks that are still inedible, for example). Or may fail completely, and he'll end up with something he didn't want.
Bill-noculars will be less effective, so he won't be able to use them to see as far as clearly.
Nature warping magic to be nerfed.
New Powers after canon update to 9.6
Shadow Dance: Leave your body to travel as a shadow.
Lightning in a Bottle: Make the immaterial material and use it as you will. For example, capture a memory and potentially show it to someone else (results may vary and OOC plotting to be used of course), or capture sunlight to either use or give to someone else.
The following to be used with prior OOC plotting:
Oath - When someone promises something, Billie can make it supernaturally binding via pinky swear. Consequences to be determined via OOC plotting up to death. If the person breaks their promise the effect will come to pass and Billie will know immediately that the promise was broken.
Fairy Dust - roll to put people to sleep. can affect a group and be done from a distance
Compulsion to make other people answer the question, "What do you want most?"
